What is ‘Hiring Process’ – the process of recruiting new employees to a company or an organization. It includes deciding what skills are needed, what or how much level of experience are required, advertising and marketing the open position, conducting interviews and presenting job offers and finally onboarding the newly hires.
Understanding the hiring process for applicants
The hiring process for most companies and organization requires a careful selection from multiple applicants to ensure they hire the best workers. This could often get tedious especially for large companies.
Understanding the hiring process from an applicant point of view is vital to make sure you are prepared for every step of the way. Requirements from each step may vary and may have different timeline, therefore knowing it gives you an advantage as an applicant.
The steps in recruiting process
1. Describing the skills and level of experience required
Before advertising for a job, hiring managers need to create a well defined job description. Job duties, daily tasks, responsibilities for the said position and level of experience – these are the most common information that has to be in the job description.
Note: a well-written job description is crucial in fulfilling your hiring needs, for the reason that it is the first-hand information that applicants will comprehend.

2. Advertising and Marketing for the Open Position
Once you’ve crafted your job description, it is now time to market it. Finding the best talent for your company may not be as easy as it sounds as the current working scene has now become so competitive.
Here are some things you can try:
- Inform your current employees about the open position so they can give referrals
- Invest on social media posts, online job platforms and other paid ads activity
- Search for upcoming job fairs and participate in it
- Take a look back at your past interview list (if you already have one)
- Get notified on university events for graduating students
- Update your website’s job page
- Utilize your company email to send out information about the job
3. Conducting Interviews
The next step is conducting interviews from the pool of applicants that you have gathered. Initial interviews are usually done by HRs over the phone where they can quickly determine if the applicant could make it to the next step or not.

For HRs, a good and effective scheduling plays a great role on this part as both the applicants as well as the department managers. Once an applicant passes the series of interviews, a job offer usually comes next.
4. Onboarding the newly hired
After the applicant accepts the offer, it is now time to bring them on board. This process usually includes:
- Employee paperworks and signing
- Introduction of company values, goals, etc.
- Team Introduction
Other onboarding steps may be explained by the department manager/head to the applicant during the orientation – such as projects, KPIs and expectations.
