Tips on Onboarding New Remote Employees

Most companies all over the world these days have transferred to a work from setup – aside from the usual meetings and presentations, job interviews are also done online. If you are part of the Company’s Human Resource department here are 5 Tips on Onboarding New Remote Employees.

1. Create an “on-boarding” checklist

By creating an “on-boarding” checklist for the new hires, the process of recruitment and company introduction could flow smoother and faster. It is also always better to list down all the things they need to not forget anything along the way, such as:

  • downloading a certain team program/app
  • which group channels should they join into
  • list of documents they need to sign

This way, it can help the on-boarding to be quicker and easier.

2. Introduce the New Employee to their Mentor

A recipe of being successful in a company is a mentor that guides them along the way on a regular basis. Every new hire should have a chance to meet and connect with their head/mentor just as they should with other employees – this is one way of welcoming them and making them feel that they belong. Aside from this, a new hire’s connection to their mentor could help them familiarize themselves with the tasks that need to be done and make sure all of their questions are answered.

3. Make them feel that they belong

The breakout of the global pandemic has made many employees realize a sense of separation issue because of working from home. This is even harder for new hires as it may take longer for them to actually meet their colleagues in person and sometimes can make them feel isolated. One way to solve this is to make them feel that they belong. A short meet and greet is a good idea for the whole team to discuss things unrelated to work. It would also help to have an assigned time each week for a recess so that employees could have time catching up on each other.

4. Provide New Hires a Company Handbook

Having a soft copy of all the existing company culture, handbooks and other related documentation about the company can make the introduction a lot easier. A handbook can provide insights and a clear background to the new hires about the company and its culture, history, successes, etc.

5. Initiate professional development and personal growth

One of the key things in having success in each company is developing growth for their employees. Human Resource Managers can provide opportunities for new hires to courses online right after the orientation or even collaborate with the specific team managers for training related to the department. The effect of this COVID-19 pandemic brought a challenge for newly hired members of the company as well as on the hiring managers as finding the best candidate is mostly done online. By remembering these 5 simple steps for on-boarding new hires, you can be sure of a successful process introducing them to the company.
