Understanding the different types of Virtual Assistants

10 Types of Virtual Assistants

These days, the virtual assistant industry is seen as a global business standard and remote support admins are becoming an increasingly popular job, helping countless professionals with their businesses.

If you are a Virtual Assistant yourself, or thinking of hiring a V.A., but you’re unsure what skills to seek – this article might just be for you.

In this guide, we will explain the different types of virtual assistants, share what they actually do, and help you understand better which one is best for you.

When did it all start?

When the pandemic hit the whole globe back in 2020, the global workforce was forced to adjust to the challenges. There were mass layoffs due to companies shutting down, transport restrictions hindered logistic operations, and employees were forced to shift to a work-from-home setup.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show that the number of remote employees rose from 6% in 2019 to almost 18% in 2021 – tripling in just 2 years. One of the most prominent jobs within that remote category is the virtual assistant.

Virtual Assistants in 2026

With its rise, the virtual assistance industry has now become an integral part of many companies and no longer seen as just an optional support. Virtual assistants offer flexibility when handling workloads.

They are also a much more cost efficient option compared to a full-time employee.  VAs can also specialize in specific areas needed for support. Not only can you hire a general assistant, you can opt to select one who is an expert in a specific task, industry, or function.

Different types of Virtual Assistants

Because VAs can have different specializations, it is best to know what skills they have to ensure you hire the right one.

Below are the different types of virtual assistants and their expertise.

General Virtual Assistant

A General Virtual Assistant (GVA) is the most common type of VA.  They can do most of the administrative tasks for you, such as handling emails, managing schedules and general organization.

Unlike specialized VAs, a general virtual assistant is not typically hired for a specific task or department. They usually do repetitive and time-consuming tasks so that business owners can free up their time and focus on higher-level activities.

Specialized Virtual Assistants

If you want someone to focus in one area of a business such as marketing, social media management, sales, CRM management, bookkeeping, etc. a VA trained and specialized in that area will have in-depth skills needed for that field.

Specialized Virtual Assistants usually require very little guidance, since they are dedicated to a specific niche, industry, or technical skill set.

Industry-Specific Virtual Assistants

From the name itself, Industry-Specific Virtual Assistants are experts in a certain industry. These types of VAs usually have undergone deep education and training and are knowledgeable on the operation, compliance, and the overall vertical of the industry.

For instance, a Legal VA isn’t just dealing with emails; they are familiar with legal jargon, document formatting, and the strict confidentiality guidelines of law firms. When you hire an industry-specific VA, you don’t just pay for basic admin help, you are paying for domain expertise.

What is the difference between Industry-specific VA’s and Specialized VA’s?

Simply put, a specialized VA is someone who has an expert level of skill on a task or is an expert using a certain tool. While industry-specific VAs are an expert on the whole vertical of a specific industry. For example, in SEO, an industry-specific VA manages the whole operation and day-to-day runaround while the specialized VA can be focusing on a specific task such as backlinking, website design, or content writing.

IT Support/Technical Virtual Assistants

Technical Virtual Assistants provide IT support such as website and systems troubleshooting and other backend tech solutions.

If your business needs IT support, hiring a technical VA for additional help might be a good idea. They can assist on tasks such as plugin updates, fixing minor bugs, CRM refresh, etc.  These types of assistants are usually a cheaper option compared to hiring a full-time IT/tech support employee as they work less hours yet can still help in preventing downtime and ensuring digital infrastructure are functional and secure.

Creative Virtual Assistants

A Creative Virtual Assistant is an expert on making something that is visual, often creating materials for announcements or recognition.

Business owners usually hire Creative Virtual Assistants to help with their promotions, graphic design or video editing. Having a digital presence is critical to any company, and creating online material is where creative assistants can help greatly. They can assist with designing assets, creating campaigns on social media, and help on any branding efforts – basically putting a creative touch to your projects to gain an audience.

Social Media Virtual Assistants

As the name suggests, Social Media VAs are experts in management of companies’, brands’, or even celebrities’ social media accounts. These types of assistants put up engaging content, interact with followers and are responsible for increasing the engagement and reach metrics of your social media channels such as in YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook.

Where social media platforms have become another source of income, companies and brands see this as an opportunity to not only improve their popularity but also establish an income stream – a spot where social media VAs fit perfectly.

What is the difference between a Creative Virtual Assistant and a Social Media Virtual Assistant?

Although both these types of assistants work on your online projects and can sometimes overlap, a Creative VA focuses on the “artistic” side of things such as creating and editing materials, while a Social Media VA is responsible for making sure a material is seen, distributed and effectively engaged within social media platforms.

Personal Virtual Assistants

Personal VAs are commonly hired by business owners and executives who need help in balancing their personal life and work.

You can assign your personal VA online tasks such as booking travel and making reservations, personal calendar management and online shopping, etc. We have this article written for this to give you more insight: 7 Surprising Tasks You Can Delegate To A Virtual Assistant

Customer Service Virtual Assistants

Customer Service VAs are responsible for handling customer communications and support for any product or service related concerns.

These types of assistants operate across multiple platforms designed to assist customers through phone calls, emails, and chat. Customer Service VAs are very common in industries like E-commerce, Travel, Hospitality (like short-term rentals / Airbnb), and SaaS. They help ensure and maintain your customers’ positive experience.

Conclusion

Remember: deciding on which type of help you will get will not only save you money and time, it can also help your business overall. By knowing and understanding the types, roles, skillsets, expertise and capabilities of each virtual assistant, you can be sure your tasks are done correctly and you can focus on bigger priorities.

She is knowledgeable (extremely), hard working and committed to Quality Care. Because she is new, some leadership is challenging her, but she can handle it. The licensed nurses and CNAs LOVE her.
