How do you become a nurse in an assisted living facility?

10-22-2021 | By Devore Recruiting Blog Posts

Qualified Nurse

An Assisted Living Facility can be considered as one of the best options for an elderly and person with disabilities in the longer future. Facilities like these help seniors receive specialized assistance with their everyday activities and a focused aid on their health as they transition to another phase of their lives. These Assisted Living Facilities will not be possible without the help of nurses with their skills and other healthcare professionals that provide absolute supervision and support for the residents. A Nursing career and other related medical/health service job is one that has always been on-demand up to this day. But How does one become a Qualified Nurse in an Assisted Living Facility? Read along as this post aims to give insights on the basic requirements of becoming a nurse in an assisted living facility.

Licenses and Certifications

Working in an Assisted Living Facility usually requires certifications to be a nurse. Although many different types of nurse are accepted here are some of the most common licenses being asked:

  • Registered nurses (RNs)
  • Licensed practical nurses (LPNs)
  • Certified nursing assistants (CNAs)
  • Nurse practitioners (NPs)

Responsibilities of an Assisted Living Nurse

A same level of care and assistance from a home or hospital is what can be experienced in an Assisted Living Facility. These are the most common roles and responsibilities required: Personal and Focused Care – nurses must help a resident with daily activities and needs such as dressing, bath, and even in meal time. In some cases nurses also assist residents on their physical exercises as prescribed by a physical therapist to improve their physical conditions. Medication Care – nurses must also assist on medication of the residents making sure they administer their prescribed medication in time and the right amount, as elders tend to forget to take their medicines sometimes. Communication with Relatives – nurses are also sometimes tasked to relay any important information regarding the resident’s health and well being to their families and loved ones. To find out more about the roles of a registered nurse in an assisted living facility, learn more from this blog: Role of the Registered Nurse in an Assisted Living Facility

Required Skills for an Assisted Living Nurse

It is very important that a nurse has a long patience combined with compassion. Some residents could be dealing with conditions such as dementia, and PTSDs while others have Alzheimer’s – therefore being relatively patient to them is one key thing on perfecting the job. A good communicator is also one good factor for this role as elderly people AND their relatives will somehow be required to deal with difficult conversations along the way. There may be more requirements and other certifications that we have not mentioned to this post as it could depend on the type of ALF, but these are the basic and fundamental ones to being a Qualified Nurse in an Assisted Living Facility. If you are looking for a qualified nurse to be a part of your Assisted Living Community or you may be a nurse looking to land a job, feel free to browse our website as we offer recruiting services for both ends. "Bita is EXACTLY what our facility needs. We have been working for a while at changing our image. She has joined us at precisely the right time. She is knowledgeable (extremely), hard working and committed to Quality Care. Because she is new, some leadership is challenging her, but she can handle it. The licensed nurses and CNAs LOVE her. She already has had a very positive impact. I am extremely grateful"
